Gastroenterology viewed through a glass darkly: An IDI perspective

Title : Gastroenterology viewed through a glass darkly: An IDI perspective

Abstract:

AI is so inclusive that it stands to radically alter the employment landscape within  medicine. Entire  subspecialities will be cannibalized or fragmented into smaller entities.

Physicians are both providers  and venders of medical services. The services rendered emanate from the discipline’s scientific base Gastroenterology as a discipline is analogous to someone enjoying a warm beach with little or no knowledge of the approaching tsunami that will radically alter the fiscal landscape.

The multitude of disease entities embedded within the abdomen has provided gastroenterologists with a significant number of employment opportunities to such an extent that the scientific portion of rendering service has become subordinate to that of being vendors of services. If the underlying knowledge base is not expanded, the value of the service rendered diminishes.

As a discipline, gastroenterology has a  weak basic science underbelly. Much of what is presented  as research within the discipline is self-serving  product enhancement  rather than expansion of the events that combine to produce, avoid or terminate disease.

AI has removed the luxury of the status quo/Knowledge is what dictates patient flow. Gastroenterologists can collectively enjoy the fiscal warmth of the beach, believing that AI is just a bad dream that will pass in the night or prepare for an altered survival and flourishing.
