Esophageal Perforation Is A Medical Condition That Occurs When A Hole Or Tear Forms In The Wall Of The Esophagus, The Muscular Tube Connecting The Mouth To The Stomach. This Condition Can Be Caused By A Number Of Factors, Including Accidental Swallowing Of A Sharp Object, Medical Procedures And Endoscopic Examinations, Or From Severe Vomiting Or Coughing. When Esophageal Perforation Occurs, The Contents Of The Stomach, Including Acid, Digestive Juices And Bacteria, Can Leak Into The Chest Cavity And Cause Infection. Symptoms Of Esophageal Perforation Can Include Chest Pain, Difficulty Swallowing, Fever, And Coughing Up Blood. Immediate Medical Attention Is Needed When Esophageal Perforation Is Suspected. Diagnosis Is Usually Made Through Endoscopy And Imaging Tests Such As X-Rays And CT Scans. Treatment Is Typically Surgical And Involves Repairing The Tear Or Hole In The Esophagus And Repairing Any Damage To Surrounding Tissues. Antibiotics May Be Prescribed To Prevent Infection. In Some Cases, The Esophagus May Need To Be Removed If It Is Too Severely Damaged.
