The neurology of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas is known as neurogastroenterology, and it involves the integration of the enteric nervous system (ENS) and the central nervous system to regulate digestion and the gastrointestinal system. Neurogastroenterology focuses on diseases of the intrinsic enteric neural system, also known as the "brain of the gut," which is a portion of the nervous system that regulates gastrointestinal motility, endocrine secretions, and microcirculation. Treatment for neurogastroenterological and motility issues is determined by the nature of the problem.
