Stress Ulcers Are A Type Of Lesion That Can Occur In The Stomach Or Intestine When An Individual Experiences A Prolonged Period Of Stress. They Are Usually Caused By The Release Of The Hormone Cortisol, Which Is Released In Response To Stress. This Hormone Increases Acid Production In The Stomach, Which Can Lead To The Formation Of Ulcers. Stress Ulcers Can Be Very Painful, And Can Lead To Other Health Problems Such As Gastrointestinal Bleeding And Perforations. The Most Common Symptom Of A Stress Ulcer Is Abdominal Pain. This Pain Is Usually Felt In The Upper Abdomen And Can Range From Mild To Severe. Other Symptoms May Include Nausea, Vomiting, Loss Of Appetite, And Weight Loss. In Some Cases, The Ulcers May Also Cause Dark, Tarry Stools Due To Bleeding In The Gastrointestinal Tract. Stress Ulcers Can Be Diagnosed Through Endoscopy, A Procedure In Which A Flexible Tube Is Inserted Through The Mouth And Into The Stomach And Small Intestine. During This Procedure, The Physician Can View The Ulcer And Take A Sample For Biopsy. Treatment For Stress Ulcers Typically Involves Medications To Reduce The Amount Of Acid Being Produced In The Stomach And To Promote Healing.
