Biopsy

Biopsy

A biopsy is a medical procedure used to remove a small sample of tissue from a patient for diagnostic purposes. The sample is typically taken from an area of the body that is suspected to have an abnormality or disease. The tissue sample is then examined under a microscope by a pathologist for further analysis. Biopsies are most commonly used to diagnose cancer and other diseases, such as infections and autoimmune disorders. The biopsy procedure begins with a physician obtaining a patient’s medical history and performing a physical examination. Depending on the type of biopsy, the physician may use imaging techniques such as ultrasound, X-ray, or CT scan to identify the exact location of the abnormal tissue. Once the area to be biopsied has been identified, the physician will use a specialized instrument to remove a sample of the tissue. The tissue sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. In some cases, the sample will be stained with a dye so that specific cells are more visible under the microscope. The pathologist will then examine the sample under a microscope to look for any abnormal or cancerous cells. Based on the findings of the biopsy, the physician can determine the best course of treatment.
