Cimetidine, also known by the brand name Tagamet, is a histamine-2 blocker used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines. It works by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Cimetidine also is used to treat conditions that cause the overproduction of stomach acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Additionally, it’s sometimes used to treat conditions such as heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or dyspepsia. Cimetidine is available in both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription forms and is typically taken by mouth. The OTC version is typically taken for no more than two weeks. The prescription version is typically taken for up to 12 weeks. In some cases, it may be taken for longer periods of time. The most common side effects associated with cimetidine include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, and headache. It may also cause interactions with some medications, such as blood thinners, seizure medications, and antidepressants. It’s important to tell your doctor about all medications and supplements you take, so they can monitor for any potential drug interactions. Cimetidine is generally safe and well-tolerated. However, it’s important to follow your doctor’s instructions and take the medication as directed. If you experience any side effects or adverse reactions, contact your doctor right away.
