Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove lesions from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It is a safe and effective way to remove precancerous and cancerous lesions from within the GI tract, as well as other types of lesions such as polyps. The procedure can be performed in the outpatient setting and is typically conducted using an endoscope, which is a flexible tube with a camera attached. During EMR, the doctor will first use the endoscope to locate and identify the lesion. A small amount of saline solution will then be injected into the area to raise the lesion, which makes it easier to remove. The doctor will then use a specialized piece of equipment to cut the lesion away from the wall of the GI tract. This piece of equipment is known as an endoscopic mucosal resection. After the lesion is removed, the doctor will use the endoscope to examine the area to make sure it is free of any remaining tissue. EMR is considered to be a safe and effective procedure for removing precancerous and cancerous lesions. It does not require major surgery and has a high success rate in treating precancerous and cancerous lesions. In addition, it can be used to treat a variety of other lesions, including polyps. EMR is an important tool for early detection and prevention of lesions in the GI tract. By catching the lesions early, it can help to reduce the risk of complications and progression of the disease. It is also a valuable tool in the treatment of precancerous and cancerous lesions, as it can help to prevent them from becoming more serious.
