Esophageal Varices Are Enlarged Veins In The Lining Of The Esophagus, The Muscular Tube That Carries Food From The Throat To The Stomach. They Are Caused By Increased Pressure In The Portal Vein, The Vein That Carries Blood From The Intestines To The Liver. Esophageal Varices Can Cause Serious Complications If Untreated. These Include Bleeding From The Esophagus, Abdominal Pain, Nausea, Vomiting, And Difficulty Swallowing. If Left Untreated, The Bleeding Can Be Severe And May Even Be Fatal. Risk Factors For Developing Esophageal Varices Include Cirrhosis Of The Liver, Portal Vein Hypertension, And Thrombosis Of The Portal Vein. Treatment For Esophageal Varices Includes Medications To Reduce Pressure In The Portal Vein, Such As Beta-Blockers And Nitrates. In Severe Cases, Surgery May Also Be Necessary To Reduce Pressure. In Order To Prevent Esophageal Varices, It Is Important To Manage Any Underlying Conditions That Can Increase Pressure In The Portal Vein. This Includes Avoiding Alcohol, Maintaining A Healthy Weight, And Controlling Any Other Medical Conditions. It Is Also Important To Get Regular Check-Ups To Monitor For Any Changes In The Esophagus Or The Portal Vein.
