Gallbladder Disorders
The gallbladder is a small organ in the digestive system that stores bile. Bile is a fluid produced by the liver to help break down fats in the small intestine. Gallbladder disorders may include inflammation, infection, stones or blockage of the bile ducts. Symptoms of gallbladder disorders may include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and fever.
Cholecystitis
Cholecystitis is the most common type of gallbladder disorder. It is an inflammation of the gallbladder that can be caused by the presence of gallstones or a bacterial infection. Symptoms may include pain in the right upper abdomen, nausea, vomiting, fever and chills. Treatment usually involves antibiotics and possibly surgery to remove the gallbladder.
Gallstones
Gallstones are hard, pebble-like deposits that form in the gallbladder. They can vary in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. While some people may not experience any symptoms, others may experience abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever and jaundice. Treatment may include medications, surgery or a procedure called lithotripsy, which uses sound waves to break up the stones.
Biliary Dyskinesia
Biliary dyskinesia is a gallbladder disorder that is usually caused by an imbalance of hormones. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, bloating, nausea and vomiting. Treatment may involve medications, dietary changes and lifestyle modifications. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the gallbladder.
Gallbladder Cancer
Gallbladder cancer is a rare type of cancer that affects the gallbladder. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, jaundice, weight loss and fever. Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Gallbladder disorders can be serious and should be evaluated and treated promptly. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of a gallbladder disorder, it is important to seek medical attention.
