Hematemesis Is A Medical Term Used To Describe The Vomiting Of Blood. This Could Be Either Partially Digested Blood From The Stomach Or Freshly Coughed Up Blood From The Respiratory Tract. It Is A Symptom Of Various Medical Conditions And Requires Immediate Medical Attention. The Most Common Cause Of Hematemesis Is Gastrointestinal Bleeding, Which Can Be The Result Of A Variety Of Things Such As Ulcers, Gastritis, Esophageal Varices, Or A Mallory-Weiss Tear. Other Causes Could Include Cancers, Trauma, And Foreign Objects That Have Been Swallowed. The Color And Consistency Of The Blood In The Vomit Can Help To Determine The Source Of The Bleeding. For Example, Bright Red Blood Is More Likely To Come From The Upper Gastrointestinal Tract, While Darker, Coffee-Ground Colored Blood Is Indicative Of A Bleed Further Down The Digestive Tract. If A Person Experiences Hematemesis, They Should Seek Immediate Medical Attention. After A Proper Diagnosis Is Made, The Cause Of The Bleeding Can Be Treated And The Patient Monitored. Depending On The Severity Of The Bleeding, The Patient May Need To Be Hospitalized To Receive Intravenous Fluids And Blood Transfusions. In More Severe Cases, Surgery May Be Recommended.
