Liver Abscess

Liver Abscess

A liver abscess is a collection of infected material that forms within the liver. It is an accumulation of pus surrounded by inflamed tissue. It is a potentially life-threatening condition that requires prompt treatment. The most common cause of a liver abscess is a bacterial infection. It can occur when bacteria enter the liver through the bloodstream or when bacteria from another part of the body, such as the intestines, travel through the bloodstream and into the liver. Other causes include trauma, blockages in the bile ducts, parasites, and certain medical conditions, such as cirrhosis or cancer. Symptoms of a liver abscess may include pain in the upper right abdomen, weight loss, fever, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and jaundice. Other symptoms may include fatigue, night sweats, and confusion. Diagnosis of a liver abscess is usually made using imaging tests, such as ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) scan. Blood tests, liver function tests, and other tests may also be used to help confirm the diagnosis. Treatment for a liver abscess may involve antibiotics to control the infection, drainage of the abscess, and supportive care. Surgery may be necessary depending on the size and location of the abscess.
