Neonatal gastroenterology is a subspecialty of pediatric gastroenterology that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of newborns and infants who have gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. This field of medicine specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the digestive, nutritional, and metabolic health of infants. Common disorders include those that affect the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas, as well as any medical conditions related to feeding and nutrition. Neonatal gastroenterologists work closely with obstetricians and pediatricians to provide comprehensive care for these infants. Neonatal gastroenterologists are trained to identify and diagnose GI disorders in newborns and infants. They use a combination of medical history, physical exams, laboratory tests, imaging studies, and endoscopy to diagnose and manage GI problems. Common treatments include medications to reduce symptoms, dietary modifications and nutritional supplements, and, in some cases, surgery. Neonatal gastroenterologists also provide counseling and education to parents and caregivers to help them understand the best ways to feed and care for their infant. Neonatal gastroenterology is an important subspecialty of pediatric medicine.
