Probiotics are dietary supplements or foods containing live bacteria or yeasts that are beneficial to health. They are commonly used to maintain the balance of bacteria in the gut and improve the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. Probiotics are widely used to treat a variety of gastrointestinal disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and antibiotic-associated diarrhea. They are also being studied for their potential to prevent or treat other conditions, such as allergies and eczema. The beneficial bacteria in probiotics are thought to work in several ways. They may help to reduce inflammation, improve digestion, and boost the immune system. Additionally, some probiotic bacteria produce substances that can inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. Research suggests that probiotics can help to restore the balance of bacteria in the gut after antibiotics, reduce the risk of infection, and reduce the severity of some digestive disorders. The most common probiotic bacteria are from the genera Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. These bacteria are naturally found in the digestive tracts of humans and animals. They can also be found in fermented foods, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, miso, and kimchi.
