Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms associated with COVID-19, like nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, can be challenging to treat. While the exact cause of these symptoms is still unknown, there are some treatments available to help reduce their severity and frequency. In general, the goal of GI symptom treatment is to manage nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhoea, while also providing adequate nutrition and hydration. To reduce nausea, doctors may recommend anti-vomiting medications, such as ondansetron. Ondansetron works by blocking signals from the brain to the stomach, which can reduce nausea. Additionally, anti-diarrheal medications, such as loperamide, can help reduce the severity and frequency of diarrhoea. It is important to stay hydrated, even if nausea and vomiting make it difficult. An oral rehydration solution can help replenish electrolytes and other essential minerals. In addition to medications, lifestyle modifications, such as avoiding spicy foods, may help reduce GI symptoms. To ensure you are getting adequate nutrition and hydration, your doctor may recommend a high-calorie and nutrient-rich diet. This could include foods like eggs, peanut butter, yogurt, and fortified cereals.
