Viral Infections of the GI Tract

Viral Infections of the GI Tract

Viral infections of the gastrointestinal tract, or GI tract, are a common cause of illness in humans. The GI tract consists of the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum, and is responsible for digestion and absorption of food and nutrients. Viral infections in this area can cause inflammation, pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and can be caused by several different types of viruses, including rotaviruses, noroviruses, and adenoviruses. Rotaviruses are the most common cause of viral gastroenteritis in infants and young children. They are highly contagious and can spread through contact with contaminated food or water, as well as through direct contact with an infected person. Symptoms of rotavirus infection include diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain. Treatment typically includes supportive care such as rehydration, and antibiotics are not effective against rotaviruses. Noroviruses are another type of virus that can cause viral gastroenteritis, most commonly in adults. They are highly contagious and can spread through contact with contaminated food or water, as well as through direct contact with an infected person. Symptoms of norovirus infection include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain.
