Abdominoperineal Resection Is An Operation That Removes The Anus, Rectum And Part Of The Sigmoid Colon. This Procedure Is Used To Treat Rectal Cancer That Has Spread To The Lower Part Of The Intestine. This Type Of Surgery Is Usually Done When The Cancer Has Spread Too Far To Be Removed By A Simpler Operation Or If The Cancer Has Already Spread To Nearby Lymph Nodes. The Surgery Starts With An Incision Made In The Abdomen And Then A Long Incision Is Made In The Lower Part Of The Abdomen, Extending Downward To The Anus. The Surgeon Then Removes The Rectum And Sigmoid Colon, And May Remove Some Of The Nearby Lymph Nodes. The Surgeon Will Then Close The Incision Using Sutures. In Some Cases, A Colostomy May Be Created. This Is A Procedure Where A Stoma Is Created On The Abdominal Wall, And The End Of The Colon Is Connected To It. This Allows Waste To Be Removed From The Body Through The Stoma And Into An External Pouch. After The Surgery, The Patient Will Usually Need To Stay In The Hospital For Up To Two Weeks. During This Time, They Will Be Monitored For Any Complications.
