Barrett's Oesophagus

Barrett's Oesophagus

Barrett’s Oesophagus, Also Known As Barrett’s Syndrome, Is A Condition In Which The Normal Cells Of The Oesophagus Are Replaced With Abnormal Cells. This Condition Is Usually Caused By Long-Term Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) And Is Thought To Be A Precursor To Oesophageal Cancer. Symptoms Of Barrett’s Oesophagus May Include Heartburn, Chest Pain, Difficulty Swallowing, And A Feeling Of Fullness After Eating. Barrett’s Oesophagus Is Diagnosed Through Endoscopy, In Which A Flexible Tube With A Light And Camera Is Inserted Into The Oesophagus To View The Lining. During The Procedure, Tissue Samples May Be Taken For Further Analysis. If Biopsies Reveal The Presence Of Abnormal Cells, This Is A Sign Of Barrett’s Oesophagus. Treatment For Barrett’s Oesophagus May Involve Lifestyle Changes, Such As Losing Weight And Avoiding Foods That Cause GERD Symptoms, As Well As Medications To Reduce Acid Reflux. Endoscopic Treatments, Such As Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) And Cryotherapy, May Be Used To Destroy The Abnormal Tissue. Surgery May Also Be Recommended In Some Cases. It Is Important To Monitor Barrett’s Oesophagus Closely, As There Is An Increased Risk Of Developing Cancer. Regular Endoscopies And Biopsies Are Recommended To Check For The Presence Of Pre-Cancerous Cells. These Tests Help To Ensure That Any Changes In The Oesophageal Lining Are Detected And Treated Early. Overall, Barrett’s Oesophagus Is A Serious Condition That Requires Close Monitoring And Prompt Treatment. By Taking Steps To Reduce Acid Reflux And Getting Regular Endoscopies, People With Barrett’s Oesophagus Can Reduce Their Risk Of Developing Cancer.
