A Colostomy Is A Surgical Procedure That Creates An Opening In The Abdomen (Stoma) To Allow Waste Material To Be Diverted From The Colon. The Waste Material Is Then Collected In An External Pouch Known As A Colostomy Bag. The Colostomy Is Typically Done When Part Of The Colon Needs To Be Removed Due To Disease Or Injury. The Purpose Of A Colostomy Is To Create An Alternative Pathway For The Evacuation Of The Intestine That Bypasses The Damaged Or Diseased Portion Of The Colon. The Colostomy Also Allows The Remaining Healthy Portion Of The Colon To Rest And Heal. In Some Cases, A Colostomy May Also Be Used To Allow The Intestine To Heal After A Major Surgery. Colostomies Can Be Temporary Or Permanent. Temporary Colostomies Are Typically Done When The Intestine Needs To Heal Or When The Patient Needs To Be Monitored For Medical Reasons. A Permanent Colostomy Is Done When The Damaged Portion Of The Colon Is Removed And Cannot Be Reconnected. Colostomies Are Usually Performed Through An Open Abdominal Surgery. The Surgeon Will Make An Incision And Then Create An Opening In The Abdomen For The Stoma.
