Corticosteroids are a type of medication used to treat a variety of conditions, including allergies, autoimmune disorders, asthma, and many other inflammatory conditions. They are steroid hormones that are produced naturally in the body, and they work by suppressing the immune system, reducing inflammation, and regulating other bodily functions. The most commonly prescribed corticosteroids are prednisone and dexamethasone. Corticosteroids are typically used to treat short-term problems, such as an acute asthma attack. Other indications for corticosteroid use include chronic pain, severe allergies, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and multiple sclerosis. They can also be used to treat certain types of cancer. Corticosteroids are usually taken orally in the form of tablets or capsules. They can also be administered topically as a cream, ointment, or lotion. In some cases, they may be injected directly into the affected area or into a vein. Corticosteroids can have both short-term and long-term side effects. Short-term side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, increased appetite, and weight gain.
