Cystic Duct

Cystic Duct

The Cystic Duct Is A Small Tube-Like Structure That Connects The Gallbladder To The Common Bile Duct. It Is An Essential Component Of The Biliary System, Which Is Responsible For The Secretion And Storage Of Bile. The Cystic Duct Carries Bile From The Gallbladder To The Common Bile Duct, Where It Is Released Into The Small Intestine. The Cystic Duct Is Formed By The Union Of The Hepatic Ducts, Which Come From The Liver, And The Cystic Duct, Which Comes From The Gallbladder. The Cystic Duct Is Usually About 1 To 2 Cm In Length And Is Lined By A Thin Layer Of Cells Known As The Epithelium. The Epithelium Plays A Role In Secreting Bile, Which Helps To Digest Fat And Absorb Certain Vitamins And Minerals. The Cystic Duct Is Surrounded By The Sphincter Of Oddi, Which Is A Muscular Structure That Helps To Regulate The Flow Of Bile. In Some Cases, The Sphincter Of Oddi Can Become Overly Tight, Leading To A Condition Known As Sphincter Of Oddi Dysfunction. This Can Cause Pain In The Upper Abdominal Area And Can Interfere With The Flow Of Bile. In Addition To Its Role In The Digestive System, The Cystic Duct Also Plays A Role In The Body’s Natural Defence System. Bile Contains Antibodies, Which Help To Protect The Body From Infection. In Some Cases, Infections Can Occur In The Cystic Duct, Leading To Inflammation And Pain. Treatment Of Cystic Duct Infections Usually Involves Antibiotics.
