The large and small intestines are two of the major parts of a person's digestive system. They are responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste. When something goes wrong with either of these organs, it can lead to a variety of diseases and disorders. Common large intestine diseases and disorders include Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and diverticulitis. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation and irritation in the digestive tract. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic condition in which the intestine becomes inflamed and ulcers form on its inner lining. Diverticulitis is a condition in which small pouches (diverticula) form in the large intestine and become inflamed or infected. Common small intestine diseases and disorders include celiac disease, intestinal obstruction, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which a person's immune system attacks the small intestine when it comes into contact with gluten. Intestinal obstruction is when something blocks the small intestine, preventing food and liquids from passing through.
