Gastric Banding Is A Surgical Procedure Designed To Help People Lose Weight. It Involves Placing A Band Around The Upper Part Of The Stomach, Creating A Small Pouch And A Narrow Opening Between The Pouch And The Rest Of The Stomach. This Limits The Amount Of Food That Can Be Eaten At One Time, Which Reduces The Number Of Calories Consumed. The Procedure Can Be Done Laparoscopically, Meaning It Is Minimally Invasive, And The Band Can Be Adjusted Or Removed If Necessary. Gastric Banding Has Been Shown To Be An Effective Weight-Loss Tool, Resulting In An Average Of 20-30% Excess Weight Loss At One Year. In Addition, The Weight Loss Achieved Is Generally Maintained Over The Long Term. Gastric Banding Is A Safe And Relatively Low Risk Procedure. However, As With Any Surgery, There Are Potential Risks, Such As Infection, Bleeding, And Adverse Reactions To Anesthesia. Patients Should Be Aware That The Band May Slip Or Erode, Or That The Stomach May Become Stretched, Requiring Further Surgery. Gastric Banding Is Not A Good Option For Patients Who Have Had Prior Stomach Surgery, Certain Medical Conditions, Or Those Who Are Pregnant.
