Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disorder caused by the abnormal flow of acid from the stomach into the esophagus. It affects people of all ages, but is particularly common in adults. Symptoms of GERD include heartburn, regurgitation, difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and hoarseness. In some cases, GERD can cause serious complications, including esophageal narrowing, ulcers, and precancerous changes in the lining of the esophagus. Treatment for GERD typically involves lifestyle changes, such as avoiding certain foods and drinks that trigger symptoms, and taking medications to reduce stomach acid. In cases where lifestyle changes and medications are not enough, surgery may be recommended to tighten the esophageal sphincter and reduce reflux. Additionally, it may be necessary to make changes to the diet, such as reducing fat and eating smaller, more frequent meals. GERD is a serious condition that can have long-term consequences if left untreated. If you experience any of the symptoms of GERD, it is important to speak with your doctor so that you can receive the appropriate treatment.
