Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins located around the anus or in the lower rectum. They are common and usually not serious. In most cases, hemorrhoids can be treated with home remedies and lifestyle changes. Hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure in the lower rectum. This can be caused by straining during bowel movements, sitting for long periods of time, obesity, pregnancy, and anal intercourse. Symptoms can include itching, burning, pain during bowel movements, and bleeding. In some cases, a hard lump may form near the anus, which may be painful. Treatment for hemorrhoids includes over-the-counter medications such as creams, ointments, suppositories, and pads. Warm baths and sitz baths can also help to reduce the symptoms of hemorrhoids. If these treatments do not work, a doctor may suggest surgery or other treatments. Prevention of hemorrhoids can include exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet that is high in fiber, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding straining during bowel movements. Wiping with moistened toilet paper can also help to reduce irritation. Hemorrhoids may be uncomfortable and embarrassing, but they are usually not serious. With the right treatment, they can usually be managed at home. If symptoms persist, it is important to consult with a doctor to determine the best course of treatment.
